I have a spinning reel that's gotten a lot of saltwater use and recently the anti-reverse mechanism failed. I tried taking it apart to fix it but couldn't really figure out how to get it to lock. If anything I'd even be fine with it not being able to go backwards anymore because it's such a useless component on the reel. The reel is in otherwise good condition. Anything that I can do or is the reel essentially screwed?

Go online and find the service manual or You Tube videos for your reel. Thats the best way to go.

Modern spinning reels use a cam bearing setup in the rotor head. These are pretty sensitive to dirt and corrosion, and so need to be very clean to work. Also heavy grease will prevent them from working properly, so lube them with a light oil.

There are a couple different styles of anti reverse systems, find out how it works, check all the pieces, if a good cleaning and a touch of lube doesn't fix it it's probably better to get a new reel than buy parts to fix that one. I have fixed one that had a small cog/gear setup by adding thick grease to the assembly to get the grip it needed to engage, small spring would hold the cog back when the reel was in reverseable mode. Not sure how the instant anti reverse spinners work never had to take one apart...

I took mine apart a few days ago to clean the gears because the handle was getting harder to turn. I went too deep into the core of the reel and found six bearings I believe somehow worked to prevent 2-direction spool turning. When they fell out of the cylinder that held them, I lost two and couldn't figure out a way of reassembling to see if it could still work. That's all she wrote when it came to the infinite anti-reverse! Too bad since the reel handle turns as smooth as the day I bought the reel. Because it was a Gander Mt. product, there are no schematics and no way to order parts since the company went broke. Shouldn't complain, the reel only cost $30 and I got a few years out of it.

I've stored it in a drawer with other defunct reels just in case I come across the lost parts...

Could be. I don't own a reel that cost more than $50 and some have served me well for over 15 years. Getting parts are the problem as is re-assembling. But reel design has come a long way with prices about the same as long ago.

Some reels (mostly freshwater) have an anti-reverse lever switch, make sure that is engaged. I don't know about spinning reels but saltwater conventional reels have a spring for the anti-reverse cam arm, make sure that is in place and not broken. If broken, you may be able to find a similar spring to replace it. Make sure the arm is free to move under spring pressure.

Could be you put it back together wrong, make sure the cam arm is not in backwards.

I don't know the manufacturer who made the reel for Gander, but if you can find out who did, chances are that it is very similar to a reel the manufacturer has made.

For $30, it is only worth fixing if it is of sentimental value or you just like knowing how things work and fixing things.

Actually the reel only cost $25 on sale. I've tried inserting the part responsible for the anti-reverse another way but no luck. There is a switch but even on it doesn't matter. I have a twin reel that I took apart to see if I reassembled it wrong, but no luck. Guess I'll use the old one for parts.

Thanks for the input. Much appreciated.

    Update:
It bugged me so much that I took it apart again (for the 8th time). I found out that anti-reverse action had nothing to do with a cylinder that held some bearings that spun around a central shaft. (I found out later their purpose after completely assembled which was that it prevents a very slight grinding when the reel handle is turned).

Rather, it was an external lever under the bail part that holds the line spool, which I wired in a position permanently to prevent anti-reverse. Works like a charm, (even after still saving a few parts I found on the floor) But who cares - it works and now I can catch another 200 fish on it!

    Look Ma - no schematics!

BTW The schematics from a similar reel was of no help. Though showing how certain crucial parts were related in general, it left trial & error the only way to reassemble the more complex part combos. Now I can do it in my sleep.

As sophisticated the latest reels are, they still need some maintenance from time to time and that's where it gets sticky.

Maybe next reel will be a Zebco push button. Nah!
